It’s never too late to take up cycling
Cynthia Ashford, 80, is proof it’s never too late to take up cycling and she’s encouraging others to join the ride.

It’s taken 73 years, but one octogenarian has got on her bike again thanks to Dorset Council’s adult cycle training scheme.
Cynthia Ashford, 80, is proof it’s never too late to take up cycling and she’s encouraging others to join the ride.
Using Dorset Council’s voucher scheme to buy discounted cycle lessons, the Shaftesbury resident is now able to ride a bike again for the first time in decades.
She said: “I hadn’t ridden a bike since I was seven so taking that big step to learn to cycle again at 80 was, I must admit, daunting.
“But I’m so pleased I went out of my comfort zone as the training has really improved my confidence, and cycling is so much fun.”
Cynthia signed up for the training when she saw the Dorset Cycle Training Voucher scheme promoted online.
Cycling is an activity her husband Martin already enjoyed, and Cynthia saw this training as a way to help her join in the fun.
Although she’s not yet confident to cycle on the roads or tackle the hills that surround her home, Cynthia does regularly cycle on the North Dorset Trailway – and is loving it.
“It’s so good for me and if I can cycle after such a long break, anyone can,” Cynthia reflected.
“I would not be able to do this without the training and the amazing support and encouragement I received from my trainer Dilys – who was patient, kind and inspired confidence.
“I’m a firm believer we should continue to learn and try new things throughout our lives.”
Whether people want to improve their fitness, save money or beat traffic congestion – cycling has something for everyone.
Many people would like to cycle to work or for pleasure but are put off by the traffic, have never learned to ride or lack the skills needed to ride on road.
Dorset Council’s cycle training sessions can give people the confidence they need to get back on the saddle.
