5K Your Way

5K your way is part of Move charity, and it's to help people who have cancer or recovered from cancer to be active and to meet people. It's also open to people whose family members have cancer or also work in cancer services.

Karen – 5k Your Way Ambassador and participant:
“It has definitely helped me during my recovery. It’s been somewhere to meet people who’ve been through similar experiences with me. Not the same. We don’t all have the same experience, so it’s really a great place to go along and be able to support other people through the journey they’re going through.

It’s a great place to meet up afterwards as well and have a cup of tea and a piece of cake and talk about things could include speaking about cancer, or it could be talking about anything else too. It’s just about being in the space with people that have had similar experiences, and they might be able to help you, and make you feel like that you’re part of something really good to make people feel better.”

Jane – Participant and Ambassador:
“I got involved with 5K your way because it’s an opportunity to get together, to walk, to run, to volunteer, to be sociable, to cheer other people along and to participate in something that socially enjoyable as well as being able to be physically active.

My husband also had cancer and was treated for cancer, surgery, chemo, radiotherapy, all those things. So, his journey was quite tough. But as a way of giving something back and a way of being able to speak to people with a degree of understanding, it was an opportunity for me to do something and help others through that journey.

If you come along to 5K your way, you don’t have to talk about what’s happened to you. You don’t have to talk about your cancer, or how it’s affected your family. You can come along and participate in an everyday activity along with hundreds of other people. You can walk along, you can jog along, you can chat about cancer or not chat about it. It doesn’t matter.”
